What is CN2: Toonami? | Jeff Harris, July 1998

From the Webmaster:

The first article!

Before TOM. Before the HFIL. Before Boomerang. Before Gundam. Before The Intruder. Before Adult Swim. Heck, before Dragon Ball Z! This was the article that basically introduced the CN2 campaign to the world.

Wait, I know what you're thinking. "I thought this site was called CNX?" Well, it was. However, before CNX, there was CN2. The intial goal of this site (other than to promote the awesome block that is Toonami) was to convience Cartoon Network to create a spinoff network based on the Toonami brand. In 1999, Cartoon Network did create a spinoff network. However, this spinoff was based on the Boomerang classic animation format, not Toonami. So, to refocus the site, I changed the name and campaign from CN2 to CNX. And the rest is history. Wait, I changed it to The X Bridge later on in 2003, and now the rest is history.

A footnote. Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Tenchi Muyo, Astro Boy, Gigantor, G.I. Joe, Beast Wars, and Transformers all appeared on Toonami. This was written in 1998, when most of these shows weren't even on the radar at Cartoon Network.

One more thing. This article talked about the others that was a part of the campaign, Skullmnky (who maintained the petition part of the campaign staying on until sometime after Boomerang went on the air) and Blkcloak (one of the first Toonami sitemasters to fully embrace the block to its fullest, and still remembered after all these years by those who followed the Revolution since the beginning). This was also my first time doing a full article in my very first site. Be gentle, I was a true newbie with the online thing. Enjoy!

What is CN2: Toonami?

Right now, it's just a dream that the Inner Circle (Skullmonkey, Blkcloak, myself, and countless others) have. However, many of you might agree with its ideals.

CN2: Toonami combines the attitude of the popular Toonami afternoon lineup currently airing on Cartoon Network along with the finest action cartoons from the Claster, Saban, and Time-Warner library (along with some independently syndicated shows) and the best library of classic action shows like GI Joe, Dungeons and Dragons, MASK, and Transformers, modern shows like Calamity Jane, Beast Wars, and Batman, classic anime like 8th Man, Astro Boy, Gigantor, and Speed Racer along with modern classics like Ramna 1/2, Slayers, Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Tenchi Muyo, and Voltron. Not to mention movies and series not yet seen on American television like Akira, Ghost In The Shell, Macross, and others.

CN2: Toonami wouldn't just include kid-oriented programming. It would also feature movies and series for older, more mature audiences. Shows like Todd McFarlane's Spawn and Aeon Flux would run rampant here every night. In fact, CN2 would be more like an animation equivilant to TNT than Cartoon Network by also producing made-for-tv series and movies. In fact, this will be the first network to fully use the television ratings system to its fullest (I mean, somebody has to, right?).

CN2 would be the only place to see many of the shows we want and more.
