Datadock | Toonami Events

The thing about Toonami is that there was a reason behind the packaging, and every so often, the hosts found themselves in perilous adventures. Moltar, the first host of Toonami, had adventures that were largely contained on the comic page courtesy of the Toonami-themed issues of Cartoon Network Presents. He never got the chance to find adventures on-air like his successor, TOM.

For a three-year span, Toonami featured a Total Immersion Event that showcased the "TOMVerse" on-air and online. The on-air components were a microseries that were interconnected scene by scene. The online components featured interactive elements like games and, in some cases, comics that told tales outside of the television screen, including origin tales.

Here are the events that helped mold the TOMVerse as we know it:

Introduction: The Beginning

  • Airdate: July 10, 1999
  • Medium: 3D Animation

Introduction: The Beginning wasn't a Total Immersion Event, but it was the first time we saw TOM, who described himself as "the new Moltar," and the Ghost Planet Space Ship Absolution, Toonami's new base of operations. Like the TIEs to come, TOM interacted with the audience to introduce the new Toonami as well as himself, who, like the viewers, saw the block with new eyes.

    The Intruder

  • Airdate: September 11, 2000 - mid-November
  • Medium: 3D Animation

The first ever TIE, this story officially introduced SARA (the voice that greeted viewers with the word "Hello" in Introduction: The Beginning and, by story's end, introduced the second incarnation of TOM. While TOM and the recently activated SARA were having a conversation on the bridge about the Wall Street Journal article that called him "a bubbleheaded host," an intruder warning blared out prompting circular limited AI units known as Clyde 50s to investigate the scene. By the time TOM got there, he noticed a huge hole on the side of the ship which was made by an unseen, red creature. After patching the hole, TOM went down to face the danger head on. The intruder fought back and knocked TOM into deep space, rendering him unconscious. A small tap from a tiny asteroid was the only thing that brought him back to life. Back aboard the Absolution, the intruder was growing to a tremendous sized and revealed itself to be a metal eater. Knowing that he was the only chance to stop the creature, TOM continued searching for the intruder.

His efforts to try to stun the creature proved futile, and the intruder devoured TOM in one of the most shocking moments in the block's history. His sacrifice prompted Sara to download TOM's AI matrix, complete with his memories and attitude, into a new battle-ready chassis. This reborn TOM, dubbed TOM 2.0, was charged with a last ditch effort to save the ship. To destroy the intruder, TOM had to blow it and the engine wing it latched itself onto up by planting explosives on the inside and the outside. TOM and SARA ordered new engines and spent a couple of months at a repair station where the new viewer-selected Talon ST engines were installed. The new engines allowed the Absolution to travel in hyperspace, which sent them lightyears from one galaxy to the next.

    Lockdown

  • Premiere Date: September 17, 2001
  • Medium: 3D Animation

The second Total Immersion Event, Lockdown began when Sara detected a transmission she could not recognize from a debris field in space. At TOM's request she moved the ''Absolution'' into the debris field to get close to the ship broadcasting the signal, but wound up caught in a tractor beam launched from a derelict trash compactor in the area. In an effort to escape from the beam TOM ordered Absolution into full reverse, but this backfired when the port engine went out and the reactor shut down.

Fortunately, TOM had ordered the launch of the DOKS from the cargo bays prior to the ship getting stuck in the tractor beam. Unfortunately, without a signal to control the DOKs themselves, TOM sent a scrambling signal through the ship's transmission to Toonami viewers who tuned in to watch Dragon Ball Z (he knew there'd be an audience). He asked for volunteers to the DOKs by logging on through the Absolution's computers (courtesy of Toonami.com). The plan worked, as dozens of Toonami viewers logged onto the ''Absolution''’s systems, using Sara's interface systems to remote pilot the DOKs.

With the DOKs now in human hands TOM turned his attention to reactivating ''Absolution''’s reactor, and when he completed that task, set to work fixing the conduits that burned out when the ship attempted to reverse. Just about the time TOM completed repairs to the ''Absolution'', the DOKs, with Sara's aid, managed to locate the tractor beam room. After a fierce battle with an automated guard, the DOKs managed to knock him out using rocket launchers created from spare parts. fabricated from the parts aboard the derelict trash compactor.

With the battle droid dead the DOKs successfully disabled the tractor beam, allowing ''Absolution'' and the unidentified alien craft to escape.

    Trapped in Hyperspace

  • Premiere Date: September 2002
  • Medium: 3D Animation

The third Total Immersion Event, Trapped in Hyperspace began when Sara guided ''Absolution'' into hyperspace for a return trip to the Earth (having visited during the Kids' WB run of the bloc), but shortly after going into hyperspace Sara unexpectedly went offline due to a computer virus named Swayzak, a fiery being with an M on his head and a motiff like The Intruder who challenged TOM to regain control of the Absolution before the ship crashes into the Earth. TOM linked up to eradicate the virus from the ship's computer systems and regain control of the hyperspace system.

Ultimately, TOM managed to regain control of all ship computer systems, and made his last link up to Sara's core systems to break the virus' hold on her directly. The maneuver worked, as Sara was freed, but the virus took the opportunity to infect TOM. Fortunately, he was able to break the viral hold over him, and was reunited with Sara in the hyperdrive room. Upon his return to the bridge, Sara briefed TOM on the damage to ship and reported that, in addition to the Absolution, Swayzak had infected several other vessels in the surrounding area; but failed to maintain control over the ships. After leaving hyperspace, Sara thanked TOM for breaking the virus' hold on her.

There were also a pair of 2D comic adventures that should be considered part of the TOMverse canon. Swarm, which was a parallel series that ran with The Intruder, was a tale about the origin of TOM and how he grew to become a hero and become Moltar's choice to be the commander of the Absolution. Endgame explained the changed atmosphere of Toonami in 2003 by showing a tale that had a bounty hunter named Ocelot Rex kidnapping Sara and destroying the original Absolution. TOM went to the alien world where Ocelot Rex kept Sara only to trap and shatter the hero. Fortunately, the robot citizens of the world rebuilt TOM into his third incarnation, which helped him become more battle ready and defeat Ocelot Rex, and a brand new Absolution
